KUALA LUMPUR – Baby formula Alimentum and Human Milk Fortifier have been recalled by Abbott Laboratories (M) Sdn Bhd after two types of bacteria were detected in products made by Abbott Nutrition’s US-based Sturgis.

The Health Ministry today said it had issued an “auto-rejection” order to bar the products from entering the country, especially Alimentum (400g) and Human Milk Fortifier (0.9g x 50 sachets).

The rejected products have batch numbers starting from 22 to 37 on their barcode with containers numbered K8, SH or Z2 as well as with expiry dates April 1, 2022 and beyond.

“The ministry has taken note of a report issued by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the discovery of ‘Cronobacter sakazakii’ and ‘salmonella Newport’ bacteria in baby formula products manufactured by Sturgis.”

It added that the Malaysian company has voluntarily issued a recall notice to all its wholesalers and retailers for the two items.

“All merchants, including online ones, who still have stock of the product must immediately stop selling the items and contact the nearest district health office.

“Parents and guardians are advised to identify the batch code of the baby formula and stop using the products involved. The public is advised to monitor the baby’s health and immediately seek treatment if the baby has medical issues after drinking the baby formula.”

The ministry said Cronobacter sakazakii is widely found in the environment and can survive in dry conditions such as in infant formula.

“Cronobacter infection can cause meningitis or sepsis. However, it is rare and the symptoms are fever, lack of appetite or lethargic.” – The Vibes, February 23, 2022
