JOHOR BARU – The Kempas state seat in Johor is set to see a seven-cornered fight, as another independent candidate appeared at the eleventh hour to hand in his nomination form for the state election that takes place on March 12.
The candidacy of Mohd Suhimi A. Rahman, 62, was revealed at the Kempas nomination centre at the TNB Housing Complex Hall here earlier today.
All eyes are on Johor’s Pejuang deputy chief Nornekman Osman, 47, who is among those gunning for the seat.
Nornekman is the son of late Datuk Osman Sapian, former Johor menteri besar who had won the Kempas seat in the 14th general election in May 2018.
Osman, who led the state from May 12, 2018 to April 13, 2019, passed away in Kuala Lumpur on December 21 last year, after suffering a mild stroke.
Other candidates confirmed by the Election Commission include Kulai Umno deputy chief Datuk Ramlee Bohani, Johor Wanita PKR chief Napsiah Khamis Maharan and Nur Faizal Abdullah from Bersatu.
Incidentally, Ramlee had been defeated by Osman when he contested the seat in the last election.
The list of candidates vying for the constituency this time was announced by Kempas election officer Zihan Ismail after nominations closed today, reported Getaran, The Vibes’ Malay language sister portal.
“I have checked all the nomination papers and I am satisfied with my decision to not reject any applications,” he said.
Earlier, two other independent candidates came forward to vie for the constituency, namely teacher Mohd Azwan Abd Rahman and building designer Mohd Hambali Munadi. – The Vibes, February 26, 2022
