KUALA LUMPUR – Newly elected Perling assemblyman Liew Chin Tong has sent a message of gratitude to Johor Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership for proposing him as the leader of the opposition bloc in the state assembly.

DAP’s Liew said it was a great honour to be selected for such a role and to lead the state’s bloc, giving his commitment to ensure the ruling government is held to a high standard of integrity for the betterment of Johor folk.

“With all stakeholders including the state government, Johor civil service, the speaker and clerk of the assembly and the wider public, I look forward to strengthening the legislative and democratic processes in the Johor assembly.

“We will serve all Johoreans regardless of race, religion and class,” Liew said in a Facebook post today.

This comes following a meeting chaired by Johor PH chief Aminolhuda Hassan of Amanah, attended by Johor PKR chief Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh and Johor DAP deputy chief Teo Nie Ching which agreed to propose Liew as the state’s opposition leader.

A statement issued by the trio said the clerk of the assembly will be notified of the development through an official letter sent by them.

The statement included how they were confident in Liew’s abilities to lead the charge of reform within Johor’s assembly, mobilise commitments from the opposition bloc, and to play a constructive role in the assembly.

The trio of Johor PH leaders also reminded the Johor government under the leadership of Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi to come through on promises made by his predecessor, especially for equal allocation among government and opposition assemblymen.

They also called for more select committees to be formed within Johor’s assembly, for an opposition leader to be appointed the chairman of the state’s Public Accounts Committee, and recognition of the leader of the opposition bloc. – The Vibes, April 10, 2022
