FOURTEEN DAP grassroots members hit out at Jelutong MP RSN Rayer over his stance on the demolition of the Veeramakaliamman Temple in Bukit Lagi, Kangar.
In a joint statement, they said elected representatives should uphold respect for the law and avoid defending actions that could have breached existing regulations.
The group said the temple dispute should be looked at on the facts and relevant laws, rather than through political or religious considerations.
The issue has also involved Rayer and Perlis Mufti Prof Madya Datuk Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, who have taken different positions on the matter.
The 14 members said leaders should establish the facts before taking a position, particularly in disputes involving alleged breaches of the law and matters affecting the wider community.
“No one is above the law, including political leaders. We must be consistent and not apply double standards,” they said.
They also cited the Rukun Negara’s principle of the Rule of Law, saying it should be upheld regardless of party interests or personal considerations.
The group said there was nothing wrong with discussions to find a solution to the dispute, but such efforts should not become a reason to overlook possible violations.
It also warned that statements made without sufficient consideration could confuse the public, especially when made by politicians with legal backgrounds.
The members said such comments could create the impression that alleged unlawful acts could be defended if carried out in the name of religion, warning that this could affect relations between Malaysia’s different communities.
They called for the matter to be dealt with through the proper legal and administrative channels, based on the facts and relevant regulations.
The statement was signed by 14 DAP members, including Setia Impian branch chairman Muhammad Shakir Ameer Mohideen, Bandar Baru Bangi branch chairman Farhan Haziq and Taman Kemuncak branch secretary Izzul Afiq. – August 22, 2026
