MIRI – Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg has been confirmed to be infected with Covid-19.

The Sarawak premier tested positive late last night and members of his state cabinet were informed about the matter at around 9pm.

Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, the state minister for Women, Childhood and Community Development, said this while representing him at a Women’s Day event at a hotel here.

Fatimah told participants that Abang Johari extended his apologies for not being able to attend as scheduled.

“He was supposed to come to Miri today. He is now resting and under medical care,” she said.

Fatimah said the premier extended his wishes and gratitude to all women in Sarawak for their role in the social and economic development of the state.

Meanwhile, Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian has just finished his quarantine after being infected last week. He is said to be recovering but needs time to recuperate fully.

Dr Sim, a qualified medical doctor, is also the state minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government.

In his social media posts, he said that getting infected by the virus causes more health woes than a mild flu.

“Covid-19 is not just any mild flu,” he said. “It can cause injury to the lungs and this will be difficult for the elderly and those already suffering other health problems.

Sarawak is seeing another surge of Covid-19, with Omicron being the dominant variant. – The Vibes, March 8, 2022
