KOTA KINABALU – Sabah graft busters today detained a former state department director for accepting bribes amounting to RM1.2 million.

A source noted that the 50-year-old male suspect was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) around 10am.

The suspect who was providing services to other government agencies allegedly accepted the amount as a kickback for awarding a service project for the department, which he led between 2017 and 2018.

Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and revealed that the case is now being probed under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act.

The suspect is expected to be charged at the Kota Kinabalu sessions court soon.

This latest arrest is a reflection that corruption cases seem to be on the rise in the state.

Recently, the MACC detained 19 contractors for submitting fake documents.

Other cases saw a former diplomatic officer at the National Security Council, a former Poly-tech Mara college course director, a former school headmaster and a senior manager of Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd being charged for corruption in February alone. – The Vibes, March 9, 2022
