KOTA BARU – Prominent lawyer Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has played down reports that he is no longer chairman of Zaid Ibrahim & Co, one of the country's biggest law firms which he founded in 1987.
In a social media posting, the Kelantan-born politician, known as a maverick in political circles, said his lawyers are preparing a response on the issue of the revocation of his chairmanship.
He expressed his interest to go back to help the younger partners in the firm.
“Friends asked me about my so-called ‘termination’ by Zaid & Co. Just after four days, it’s ok, not to worry. My lawyers are preparing their response (sic),” he said.
“Anyway I offered to go back to help them; especially the younger partners who don't really know what is going on,” he said on Twitter.
Known as a leader who does not mince his words, the revocation was announced in an internal memo sighted by The Vibes.
The memo said that the company’s partnership council had unanimously decided to revoke his appointment as chairman, upon deliberation of “further information received”.
It was reported earlier that Zaid would return to the law firm that he had helped to form 33 years ago before he ventured into politics.
Zaid served as minister in the prime minister’s department in charge of law and judicial reform, under then prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, for six months in 2008 before he resigned.
It was reported last month that his appointment as chairman would take effect from November 1.
Zaid was then quoted as saying that he was delighted to be back to work together with the younger partners.
According to the website of Zico Law, Zaid Ibrahim & Co was established on June 1, 1987.
It then consisted of one lawyer and two staff housed in an office above a bicycle repair shop here in Kampung Pandan.
Its first project was the landmark North-South Expressway Project.
Two years later, the company opened its first branch office in Kota Bharu, in Zaid’s home state of Kelantan.
In 1991, it became the first law firm in the country to have branches across Peninsular Malaysia, according to the website.
In 2001 it became the first in the country to have 100 lawyers, and by 2011 the firm became part of the Zico law network of Southeast Asia.
Among the firm’s past proteges is current Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Azalina Othman Said. – The Vibes, November 11, 2020.
