KUALA LUMPUR – Those against giving a “national embarrassment” a hero’s welcome should not be silenced as this sends the wrong message to the youth.
Newly minted DAP Youth chief Dr Kelvin Yii has slammed the violent backlash displayed against those who gathered peacefully to voice their opposition against the VIP treatment given to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Penang.
“Behaviour like this should not happen and is part of an outdated political culture that we curtail for a better future of the country.
“There is hope for the country when more young people speak out. The youth’s rise to power is a good phenomenon, and I stand with them, defending their right to speak and respecting their courage to uphold the truth,” Yii said in a statement today.
“A person who has been described as a national embarrassment should not be given a hero’s treatment in his own country.”
He added that he was proud to see the youth voicing out and able to differentiate what is wrong and what is right.
“This is the maturity and awareness shown by our youth and also shows their love for our country.
“Also, with testimony from (former Goldman Sachs banker Tim) Leissner in the US, it is becoming clear how Najib and his accomplices have abused their power for personal interest.”
Najib is in Penang for a trip and was given a visibly warm welcome during his visits to markets and coffee shops in the state yesterday.
He also claimed to have witnessed a significant change in the mood among Chinese voters towards Barisan Nasional.
In December, appellate court Datuk Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil admonished Najib, calling the lawmaker a “national embarrassment” after dismissing his appeal against all seven charges involving funds belonging to former 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd.
Leissner also alleged that Najib were among the recipients of up to US$100 million in kickbacks to grease the wheels in the 1MDB financial scandal. – The Vibes, March 26, 2022
