4 Indonesians among 7 remanded over Kedah water cut

SG PETANI – Seven people, including four Indonesians, have been remanded over a water supply disruption in Sik and Kuala Muda after three treatment plants were forced to suspend operations on Thursday due to an oil spill.

Kuala Muda district police chief Adzli Abu Shah, in a statement today, said the seven, all men aged between 27 and 38, were arrested yesterday for allegedly “committing mischief that caused a diminution of the water supply”.

The three local suspects comprise two contractors and a site supervisor.

The remand order is for six days, beginning today.

Adzli said early investigations found that the oil spill occurred following the installation of a jacking pipe at a project site about 100m from a water treatment plant in Jeniang.

He said three barrels of diesel, for use by an excavator and generator, were found at the site.

He said it is believed that the oil flowed into a drain leading to Sg Muda.

Meanwhile, Kedah Works, Water Supply and Resources, and Energy Committee chairman Datuk Suraya Yaacob said water supply to the 130,000 affected residents is expected to be fully restored this evening.

“The Jeniang Lama treatment plant resumed operations at 5pm yesterday, while the Sg Pau plant commenced operations at midnight last night. The Jeniang Baru plant became operational at 9am today.” – Bernama, November 14, 2020
