LANGKAWI – The body of sailor Ahmad Nor Hassanuddin Ibrahim was found today, adrift about 1.5 nautical miles from where his tiny sampan was last seen by fishermen two days ago.
The crew member of a sunset cruise service operator was believed to have drowned as he tried to reach the yacht which had left earlier on Wednesday evening from the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club.
The chartered cruise operator is based near the club.
Apparently, Nor Hassanuddin was late for work and the 24-year-old took a motorised sampan to catch up with the vessel before he lost control and fell into the open seas off Kuah.
It was not known if he was clad in a lifejacket during his rush to board the vessel.
A few folks out on a recreational cruise found the deceased’s floating body at around 7am today before they notified the authorities.
A search and rescue party were quickly deployed to locate Nor Hassanuddin.
District police chief Shariman Ashari confirmed the incident and said the body was spotted by a group of people out on a recreational trip.
The case was classified as sudden death pending the outcome of his post-mortem.
The deceased’s father, Ibrahim Majid, 68, said that the family hails from Alor Star, and they came over yesterday after they were notified of the incident.
“We accept that his presence with us was just temporary. He was my youngest boy, and I believe our time on earth is just on loan only. We decided to bury him in Langkawi because his body was in a decomposed condition,” said Ibrahim. – The Vibes, May 13, 2022
