BUKIT MERTAJAM – A 10-year-old girl died in front of her mother after being run over by a lorry at Jalan Kg Baru, Alma, here, this afternoon.

In the incident at about 1pm, the victim, who had just been picked up by her mother from school at SK Alma, fell from the motorcycle after her mother’s motorcycle lost control.

Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Shafee Abd Samad said both mother and daughter fell on the road, without realising a lorry was approaching them.

“In the accident, the victim’s mother managed to escape to the side of the road, but her daughter was run over by a lorry and died at the scene,” he said in a statement today.

The victim’s body was sent to Bukit Mertajam Hospital for autopsy, while her mother, who suffered minor injuries, received treatment at the emergency unit of the same hospital.

“The case is being investigated in accordance with Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Police advise road users to be more careful when on the road.”

Earlier, pictures of the accident went viral on social media, where a video of the mother was also seen crying and mourning her daughter’s death while being calmed by the public.

It is understood that the victim died in a Hari Raya baju kurung, as she was participating in the school’s Aidilfitri celebration today. – The Vibes, May 19, 2022
