GEORGE TOWN – Two men died on-site after their lorry collided with a trailer during pre-dawn hours at the Penang Bridge here.

On the island-bound lane KM8.6 around 5am, lorry driver Mohd Fazrol Maarof, 39, and his assistant Muhammad Amirrudin Azizan, 19, were killed after their vehicle slammed into a slow-moving three-tonne trailer.

The Fire and Rescue Department, and police were deployed to remove debris and bodies from the scene.

While there were hardly any vehicles on the bridge then, it took time for the police and rescuers to remove the debris and the victims from the scene at KM8.6.

A state Fire and Rescue spokesman confirmed the incident, adding that two hours earlier on the opposite lane (KM8), a young woman is feared to have drowned around 3.30am.

Rescuers are combing the open sea but as at 11am, there was no sign of her.

The two incidents have caused massive traffic congestion along the bridge as drivers were on their way to work.

Attempts have been made to contact the Penang Bridge operator. – The Vibes, May 24, 2022
