GEORGE TOWN – Penang police seized 3,866 boxes of contraband cigarettes worth RM58,000 at a shop in Jalan Burma here, yesterday.

During the 4pm raid, police found that the premises were used as a storage facility for various types of illegal cigarettes sold to customers around the city.

Northeast district police chief Soffian Santong said police arrested a 44-year-old local man who was also the shop owner, and a 26-year-old migrant shop employee.

“Both suspects have no previous criminal records, and urine test results were also found to be negative for any type of drug.

“Both were remanded for one day to assist police investigation,” he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. – The Vibes, June 15, 2022
