GEORGE TOWN – DAP stalwart P. Ramasamy has dismissed as “bizarre” a think-tank’s findings on the support enjoyed by Perikatan Nasional among the different races.
The Emir Research poll’s conclusion that the Chinese and Indians strongly support the current leadership is “beyond imagination”, added the Penang deputy chief minister.
“I don’t think the Chinese community is ready to put up with extreme racial and religious parties.
“They might not be happy with us, but they have not forsaken DAP or Pakatan (Harapan). The same thing might be true with Indians.
“To say that DAP has only 17% of Chinese support is another bizarre attempt,” he said in a Facebook post.
Emir Research this week said its quarterly poll for the third quarter of 2020 found support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin from the Chinese and Indians at 50% and 49%, respectively.
The survey was carried before the tabling of Budget 2021 on November 6.
The poll found that Muhyiddin is Malaysians’ prime minister of choice with an overwhelming 65% support. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is second at 10%, followed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (8%).
“For Chinese and Indian groups, government satisfaction was not a driver for their choice of political leader,” said Emir Research in a statement.
It said a possible explanation for the perplexing results may be the unanimous yearning for political stability, which was one of the study’s most pronounced themes.
Ramasamy, however, said the Chinese and Indians will continue to back DAP and PKR, adding that the PN government has failed to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing economic crisis.
The findings by Emir Research appear to be a bizarre attempt to undermine these two communities, he said.
“Those behind this dubious research outfit called Emir Research must be out of their minds.
“The survey results of 2,000 respondents are totally bizarre and beyond imagination.”
While Chinese support for DAP may not be at the same level as before, he said, between the PH component and Umno, they are unlikely to choose the latter.
