KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysians’ level of concern about Covid-19 is well above the world average, a study by global market research company Ipsos has found.

In a statement, it said 77% of Malaysians polled as of October 20 expressed worry about the pandemic, higher than the sentiment expressed in hard-hit countries in Europe and the Americas.

It said Britain comes in second at 61%, followed by Spain (60%) and South Korea (58%).

The survey was conducted on a monthly basis in 28 nations via the Ipsos Online Panel System, in which Malaysia’s monthly sample was n=500.

The research also found that with the recent resurgence in Covid-19 cases, Malaysians increasingly feel that the country is on the wrong track – from 33% in September to 40% last month – while those who feel that Malaysia is heading in the right direction dropped from 67% to 60% in the same period.

Ipsos said the study also showed unemployment is a top concern in Malaysia throughout the pandemic, with the statistics putting it at 43% in April, July (51%) and October (48%). – Bernama, November 19, 2020
