KUALA LUMPUR – The Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council said it does not support the current iteration of the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) Bill, which was debated in the Dewan Rakyat today.
In a statement today, PH stated that the aforementioned bill has not met the necessary requirements meant for institutional reforms, and the proposed police commission is weaker compared to the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) and even the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission Bill that was also previously deliberated.
PH detailed the apparent weakness of the proposed bill, namely that IPCC members will comprise non-independent members or police officers that can be dismissed without reason at any time.
“The IPCC secretary is also appointed by the home minister, compared with EAIC, which can appoint their own secretary.
“IPCC also has no investigation power, is unable to review matters under the Inspector-General Standing Orders (IGSO) and possesses no provision for the formation of a disciplinary board.
"Therefore, Pakatan Harapan does not support this bill,”' said the statement.
Meanwhile, in the same statement, PH also voiced their support for the anti-hopping bill slated for tomorrow, with the winding-up session taking place on Thursday. – The Vibes, July 26, 2022
