KUALA LUMPUR – CIMB Bank lost a loyal customer after Putrajaya Hospital consultant physician and nephrologist Dr Rafidah Abdullah lost RM13,000 via three unauthorised transactions, leaving her with only RM50 in her account.
She took to Facebook to slam the bank for its lax security measures and for appearing to blame its customers as she did not receive the transaction authorisation code (TAC) needed for the money transfers.
“Your security must be intact. That is your job and responsibility. Bank Negara Malaysia! Where are you?”
The doctor also took issue with CIMB’s reminder to its customers to be cautious and play their role to protect themselves from cybercrime.
“Shame on you – this is what you posted in relation to what the country is upset about? Ridiculous, useless, and classic act of washing hands. Do not, I repeat, do not shift the blame.
“I demand you replace all the money of Malaysians who were scammed and accounts were hacked. It is not their fault.”
She also called on Bank Negara Malaysia to take strict action against the bank, saying the regulator should immediately shut down banks with no standard operating procedures or with security issues.
She said her money was transferred from CIMB to a Hong Leong account, and a report has been lodged with BNM.
In several posts, she said the three transactions were done between 2am and 2.30am, and CIMB told her that she accidentally clicked on links a few days ago, allowing another software to be registered to her bank account.
“This doesn’t make sense. Looks like money is not safe with CIMB Bank. I have lodged reports with CIMB, police, and so on. The feedback I’ve gotten so far says that if scammers have taken the money, it won’t be recovered.
“I’ve completely lost my trust in CIMB. I’m closing my account with them. Goodbye CIMB. Even though I’ve been with CIMB for nearly 30 years. Today, I’m very disappointed.”
She also denied downloading any strange mobile apps and has reset her phone.
“My question is simple. I have had this account for nearly 30 years. I have never registered two mobile numbers, not even changing my phone number.
“Why does a new phone registration not need a TAC? Why? I urge CIMB to only allow one mobile number for CIMB Click, or to please call the account owner to verify if there’s a change in numbers.”
She said it is not impossible to implement and she expects it to be done as soon as possible.
