KUALA LUMPUR – Google’s doodle today celebrates Saloma, the beloved Singapore-born Malaysian actress, singer and fashion icon.
A trendsetter in Malaysian entertainment from the late 1950s through the early 1980s, Saloma recorded more than 500 songs, and through her charismatic film work, paved the way for future generations of actresses in the country.
On this day in 1978, she made history when she was given Malaysia’s first Biduanita Negara award by the government, said Google in a statement.
Saloma, whose real name was Salmah Ismail, was born in Singapore on January 22, 1932.
She started singing at just 7, and went professional in her teens.
Moving to acting in the mid-1950s, she quickly became a celebrity figure.
In 1961, she married legendary artiste P. Ramlee, and over the years, the power couple forever altered Malaysian entertainment, said the statement.
