KUALA LUMPUR – The Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department has detected police’s involvement in the processing and selling of ketum juice, said director Datuk Zamri Yahya.

He told Bernama that there have been cops who misused their barracks for such activities.

“This is very worrying because the involvement of police personnel in such activities has never been detected before.

“In the past, there were reports of ketum intake among personnel, but now, it has shifted to selling and processing. They also hire others at RM80 a day to sell it.”

He said more than 10 policemen suspected of involvement were arrested recently.

“Police personnel with the rank of sergeant and below were detained at two locations here and at the barracks of the General Operations Force Northern Brigade in Ulu Kinta, Perak, which were used as a place to process ketum juice.

“They were selling it to earn extra money despite receiving a monthly salary doing their actual job as policemen.”

He said arrests were also made of personnel suspected of abusing the use of their patrol cars to smuggle ketum into Thailand.

“Police are conducting investigations to identify the extent of their involvement. This is what has been discovered so far.”

He said officers found guilty will either be suspended or terminated from the job. – Bernama, November 27, 2020
