JOHOR BARU – A total of 4,795 locations nationwide have been classified as flood “hotspots”, Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Seri Mohammad Hamdan Wahid said.

The department has also identified more than 180 areas prone to water surges (“kepala air”) in forested areas and rivers),  as well as more than 200 critical slopes around the country.

“We are monitoring the latest flood situation that is currently affecting 14 districts across five states, whereby a total of 2,763 people have been placed in 22 temporary flood relief centres.

“The department is advising the public, especially those living in those hotspot locations, to always be prepared for any possibility that may occur,” Hamdan told a press conference at the Persada International Convention Centre here today.

Among the states, Sarawak has the highest number of flood hotspots with 1,034 locations identified.

This is followed by Kelantan with 595 locations, Pahang with 554, Sabah with 520, while Johor has 432 locations.

Hamdan also urged the public and local authorities not to participate in any activities in these high-risk areas including mountains, hills, rivers, and beaches during the current period due to the monsoon season. – The Vibes, December 13, 2022
