KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is offering himself as a witness in the suit against International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

In a statement today, Dr Mahathir said he “is ready” if called as a witness.

Azmin is being sued by 10 of his constituents, nine months after the Sheraton Move that led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government.

Dr Mahathir was mentioned in the suit – for not attending the meeting in the Sheraton Hotel, Petaling Jaya, on February 23.

Also mentioned in the suit is Dr Mahathir's resignation as prime minister on February 24.

"Representatives of the people or MPs must understand that the citizens choose us as representatives to voice out their grievances in Parliament and lead them. We do not take the position to satisfy personal needs and chase positions and power," Mahathir said in a statement.

Mahathir added that the judiciary is the best forum to prove the allegations made by the 10 plaintiffs, and notes the bravery of the citizens to question Azmin's credibility and integrity.

This, he said, will help in maturing Malaysia's democracy.

Yesterday, 10 voters from Gombak's constituency sued Azmin for breach of fiduciary duty over the Sheraton Move.

The plaintiffs are also seeking a declaration that the minister had violated his constitutional oath under Article 59(1), read with the 6th Schedule, of the federal constitution, as well as damages. – The Vibes, December 2, 2020
