GEORGE TOWN – An average of 1,000 vehicles cross the Penang Bridge from the island to the mainland every hour on weekdays during the conditional movement control order, according to a policeman manning a roadblock on the bridge.

Detective Sgt Mohd Sobri Md Nor, who is in charge of the checkpoint at the island-side entrance of the bridge, said traffic volume is much higher during rush hours.

“During weekends, traffic is lower than average,” he told reporters at the checkpoint today.

Meanwhile, Logistics and Technology Department head for the Timur Laut police district, Mahadhir Mohd Salleh, said there are two stationary and two movable checkpoints in the northeast district.

He said the stationary checkpoints are located at the entrances of Penang Bridge and Batu Uban, while the moveable roadblocks are in Paya Terubong and Batu Ferringhi.

“The moveable ones are set up randomly within these areas to prevent drivers from bypassing the checkpoints,” he said, adding that moveable roadblocks are set up from 10am to 2pm and 10pm to 2am.  – Bernama, December 2, 2020
