KUALA LUMPUR – US President Joe Biden has congratulated Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on his victory in the recent general election, saying that Malaysians inspired the world by exercising their fundamental freedoms.

He commended the people for executing their civic duty as citizens by casting their votes in the polls last November.

“As democracies around the world face unprecedented challenges, your election demonstrated that democracies can deliver.

“Millions of Malaysians stepped up and made their voices heard – casting their ballots in the general election, many for the first time,” Biden said in a letter on January 24 shared on Anwar’s Facebook account today.

“Civic engagement is the cornerstone of free and open societies, and the Malaysian people inspired people around the world with their commitment to exercising their fundamental freedoms.”

Biden said Anwar’s long-standing dedication to public service will help advance peace and prosperity across the region and around the world.

“Built on strong foundations of ever-growing economic, security, and people-to-people ties, the bilateral relationship between Malaysia and the United States has also helped strengthen freedom and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region,” he added.

Biden said that both nations are advancing into a secure digital economy together, while tackling the climate crisis, addressing energy security challenges, promoting the rules-based international order, and protecting human rights.

He pointed out that the two nations are also expanding the US-Malaysia Comprehensive Partnership to broaden their interconnections.

“In the years ahead, I look forward to deepening our partnership even further – including working together to build inclusive economic growth and resilient supply chains through the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

“Together, we can advance a free, open, secure, and prosperous region – one that benefits both our peoples.” – The Vibes, January 27, 2023
