Breast cancer support group seeks to purchase own halfway home

KOTA KINABALU – A breast cancer support group from Sabah is seeking funds to acquire a halfway home for breast cancer patients. 

Kinabalu Pink Ribbon (KPR) president Lucilla Pang said the association is now looking into ways to find a permanent halfway home as opposed to their current one located in Penampang which was loaned out to them by a generous developer. 

“When people are diagnosed with cancer, it can be a debilitating experience, affecting not only their emotional well-being but also their finances. 

“KPR understands the struggle and is providing a temporary home for breast cancer patients and survivors undergoing treatment in Kota Kinabalu.  

“The Pink Haven as it is known is a rent-free house that offers a safe and supportive environment (for breast cancer patients), but it is only a temporary solution,” she told reporters here during a luncheon. 

She said a fundraiser to purchase the permanent building will be held via the association’s annual Mother’s Day Walk Abreast or at their gala dinner scheduled in March and October respectively. 

“These events are a great opportunity to show support and raise funds to help lighten the burden of those on their cancer journey. Donate today and help KPR make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by cancer,” she said. 

On another note, Pang said the association has also acquired a mobile ultrasound machine to improve early detection and treatment in partnership with Queen Elizabeth Hospital II’s breast clinic. 

“This machine will reduce the long queues for examination and thus, allow for immediate follow-up treatment. 

“KPR has conducted outreach programs with a focus on areas in and around Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, and other districts,” said Pang, adding that these areas would be the focus of their outreach programmes this year.
