KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) urged the public to report fake social media accounts if and when they spot one.

MCMC said fake accounts must not be taken lightly so as to avoid spreading fake news, hate speech, and provoking content that could jeopardise the safety and security of the country.

Social media users could report fake accounts through MCMC’s social media platform, which will then take further action in accordance with the Community Standards set.

“Social media platforms are actively identifying and confirming the authenticity of its users, but the system is not perfect. Hence, users who spot these fake accounts must report them to our social media platform.

“These fake accounts may seem harmless at first, but when they are reported, the platform providers will detect and monitor these accounts to ensure that it will not be spreading harmful content.

“Curbing the fake accounts is one way to stop the misuse of social media,” MCMC’s Corporate Communication Department, said in a statement today.

MCMC advised social media users to be mindful and responsible when using the Internet.

“Avoid becoming victims of fake accounts and the misuse of media social networks,” it said. – The Vibes, December 4, 2020.
