GEORGETOWN – Penang is working closely with the private sector to mitigate unemployment issues in view of the impending closure of the Sony plant in Perai.
Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy said that the State Government with its agencies and networks, will try its best to ensure those laid off will find re-employment.
“It is essential that the laid off employees of Sony obtain the assistance of the State and private agencies to register them as prospective workers.
“State agencies such as InvestPenang with its close nexus with industries in Penang can perform the role of job matching, not to mention to ascertain the kind of skills that they need in future employment,” he said.
Earlier, it was reported that Sony’s plant in Penang, which produces audio products such as the walkman for the export and local markets, will close in September next year after 36 years of operation.
Despite the pressing conditions of Covid-19 pandemic, Ramasamy said that Penang has done well in terms of reducing unemployment.
“With more than 10 billion in foreign direct investment and with the support of the local SMEs, Penang has done well in responding to the economic and health crises triggered by the pandemic.”
Ramasamy said Penang’s intangible ecosystem provides nourishment for investment and employment especially for skilled personnel.
In Penang, he said, the State Government can face challenges with the availability of an enabling ecosystem between the State and the private sectors.
“Yes, massive unemployment is worrisome to Penang, but the State has developed mechanisms over the years to cope with economic and financial downturns.”
State International and Domestic Trade Committee Chairman Halim Hussain said the closure of the Sony plant in Perai had resulted in almost 3,400 workers being laid off, involving 1,800 local workers and 1,600 foreigners.
It is understood that some of the selected employees will be offered to work at the Sony plant in Bangi, Selangor – The Vibes, December 4, 2020.
