KUALA LUMPUR – Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has lamented police investigations into a solidarity gathering for former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Wan Fayhsal said the gathering, which was held at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters’ compound in Putrajaya on Thursday, was not a “rally” but merely a show of support for the party boss.
“(Police) have the right to investigate and summon participants, but the gathering was not (planned by) any particular organiser.
“It was just a gathering of citizens who sincerely support (Muhyiddin). What is the issue? I don’t know why they (police) are making this (the gathering) into a problem,” he told reporters after the Bersatu Youth annual assembly here today.
He added that the group merely wished to be at the MACC headquarters to display their solidarity with Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president and Perikatan Nasional chairman.
“We were just there to show support to (Muhyiddin). Is this a crime now?”
Earlier today, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said authorities have identified the gathering’s organisers and several attendees, noting that all of them will be summoned to assist probes.
On Thursday, Muhyiddin was called to the MACC headquarters to have his statement recorded to complete the investigation into the Jana Wibawa initiative and other related issues.
On the same day, he was arrested before being released on MACC bail.
Yesterday, Muhyiddin was slapped with four charges of using his position as a public servant and prime minister to secure bribes amounting to RM232.5 million and two counts of money laundering involving RM195 million from illegal activities.
Meanwhile, Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Wan Saiful Wan Jan told reporters that the party will be leaving the investigation into the gathering up to police.
He added that he does not have additional information on whether any party figures will be summoned by police as he has been occupied with today’s party assembly.
Flanked by a crowd of supporters, other Bersatu leaders present outside the MACC headquarters in support of Muhyiddin include deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, supreme council member Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, and Wan Fahysal. – The Vibes, March 11, 2023
