KUALA LUMPUR – An animal rights group has sounded the alarm over an alleged animal abuse incident in Serdang Jaya involving a dog tied to a lorry’s rear and dragged along the road.
In a Facebook post today, Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) said that it had yesterday received complaints about the incident through its public hotline.
“We are not sure how far the dog was dragged or its condition now.
“Based on what we can see in the photo (provided by the complainant), it is possible that the dog has been tortured to death,” the group said.
The group, which is led by president Kalaivanan Ravichandran, also urged any eye witnesses of the ostensible abuse to lodge a report with the Veterinary Department, calling on authorities to investigate the case.
“Torturing animals is a crime under the Animal Welfare Act 2015 and is punishable with an imprisonment term of up to two years, a maximum fine of RM100,000 or both if found guilty.
“Appropriate action must be taken against those who violate laws and mistreat animals,” it said.
The act in question was recently used to press charges against several individuals, including a man in Skudai who pled guilty to acts of cruelty against an animal by causing undue pain to a dog.
Last month, a salesman was sentenced to 24 months in jail and fined RM50,000 by the sessions court here for neglecting his five pet cats and starving them to death in a condominium unit. – The Vibes, April 27, 2023
