KUALA LUMPUR – Individuals uneasy with the unity government’s strength are they did not get to form their own government sooner, said unity government secretariat head Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

Despite rumours to overthrow the government, Asyraf Wajdi said all lawmakers who formed the unity government are still affiliated with it and receive equal opportunities to voice their thoughts.

“Thankfully, (the support of) 148 MPs who signed the unity government’s memorandum of understanding (MoU) are still intact,” he told a press conference at the unity government secretariat headquarters today.

“What’s most important is the continuous outlet for discussions and negotiations. For this convention alone, we have had numerous meetings.

“This means it is not a one-man show. One or several parties do not dominate the rest, we all have our space to communicate.

“It is normal, those who are uneasy with our strength are actually jealous that they did not manage to form the government sooner,” he added.

Asyraf was responding to a question about whether the unity government’s upcoming national convention could silence rumours of political instability and government toppling.

He said the unity government’s maiden party-level convention on May 14 will see about 10,000 attendees.

“We hope that through this programme, there will be mutual understanding and collaboration at the party leadership level, with a clear goal to maintain stability and drive an agenda that benefits the people,” he said.

“We do not want the past to repeat itself. For four years we have had unstable governments, which affect the people.

“This is the best platform for the leaders to express their commitment to the government,” he added.

The convention’s morning session will cover the unity government’s women and youth wings, while all party leaders will speak about their commitments in the afternoon.

Previously, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) supreme council member Muhammad Faiz Na’aman posted a cryptic comment on Facebook saying: “It’s 126 already. If true, Alhamdulillah”, in what appears to be an indication of current support for Perikatan Nasional.

In a separate post, Faiz uploaded a conversation with a press member who had asked him if the opposition is confident of coming to power before the term ends, to which he replied: “Yes, we are, god willing.”

Subsequently, both Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Community Communication Department Director-General Datuk Mohammad Agus Yusoff said attempts to topple the government would not be easy. – The Vibes, May 5, 2023
