MIRI – Three teenagers who were injured in a storm have been rescued from the Mulu National Park in the interior of northern Sarawak.
They had been hit by falling tree trunks in the tumultuous weather.
The three were among a group of 16 Malaysian tourists who were visiting the Deer Cave in Mulu, the state Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said in a statement today.
The incident happened late yesterday evening near the Sg Paku Bridge, on route to Deer Cave within the park, the department said.
A search-and-rescue operation was mounted in Mulu by a Bomba unit and forest wardens there.
The trio were found and rescued at around midnight after they had gotten injured at around 6pm.
They were identified as Hendrik Kiew, a boy aged 11, Erica Kiew, a girl aged 13, and Dylan Kiew, a boy aged 14.
Sarawak Bomba said they suffered various injuries to their body and limbs.
They have been taken to the Mulu National Park Clinic and will be flown to Miri Hospital.
“The weather was stormy with lightning and thunder in the area when the incident happened.
“They were injured by falling tree trunks,” the department said.
Rescuers carried them out using stretchers to the national park’s head office and to the nearby clinic.
The rest of the group were not injured in the incident.
The department said the routes in the park are littered with fallen branches and leaves. – The Vibes, June 2, 2023
