PETALING JAYA – The Shah Alam High Court today set aside one charge against Sheila Sharon Steven Kumar, better known as “Inspector Sheila”, related to insulting the modesty of another officer.

Judge Datuk Norsharidah Awang acquitted the accused, overturning the Selayang magistrates’ court ruling that had granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) against Sheila.

The judge allowed the appeal, on grounds that the charge had not been read to her, and a plea not taken, before a magistrate as required by law.

“The appeal is allowed and the DNAA granted by the magistrate on June 26 is set aside,” the judge said.

Apparently, the charge was not read to the accused due to technical issues when the case was registered at the Selayang magistrates’ court.

Sheila was earlier charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code, for her inappropriate remarks about the rank of lance corporal to policeman Farhan Abdul Razak at Taman Sri Gombak at noon on June 15.

She was also charged under the same section with intentionally insulting the modesty of a man which carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Sheila also claimed trial to criminal intimidation against a civilian which is an offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code, and carries a maximum two years’ jail, a fine, or both upon conviction. – The Vibes, October 31, 2023
