KUALA LUMPUR – More than 700 individuals are expected to file a class action suit before the year is out over the slew of water supply disruptions in the Klang Valley.

So far, the suit has garnered 718 individuals ready to take on public agencies in charge of water provisions to court.

One of the lawyers involved in the suit, Calvin Khoo, said he hopes to have 800 individuals in the class action.

“We are finalising the statement of claim this week, and we should file it by the end of the year,” he told The Vibes.

When asked who would be named as defendants, Khoo remained tight-lipped, merely saying: “We are looking at (bringing to court) seven agencies responsible for the provision of water in the Klang Valley.”

He said the plaintiffs aim to sue these agencies for negligence.

“(Negligence against public authorities) is the angle we are looking at, but it is ultimately up to the court to decide on that.”

In October, PKR’s Wangsa Maju MP Datin Tan Yee Kew reportedly proposed a class action suit against Selangor agencies over the Klang Valley water supply disruptions.

In the beginning, Tan targeted 500 residents to join in the court action, but addressed difficulties in rallying up plaintiffs during the conditional movement control order.

“A few months ago, when there was a water (supply) disruption, YB Tan Yee Kew's constituency was badly affected.

“A lot of hawkers faced problems trying to get clean water, which is why she is very keen on pursuing the matter,” said Khoo. – The Vibes, December 15, 2020
