THE Alliance for a Safe Community has called on all motorists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians to prioritise safety on the roads during the Aidilfitri festive season to help prevent accidents and ensure a safe journey home.
Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, Chairman of the Alliance, highlighted that over two million road users are expected to travel across the country to reunite with their families for Hari Raya. With this influx of travellers, he cautioned that road safety should be top of mind.
“While this festive season brings happiness, it also sees a significant increase in road traffic, raising safety concerns,” he stated in a statement.
In light of this, Lee urged all road users to take the necessary precautions to avoid accidents, such as planning their journeys carefully to avoid peak travel periods. This, he explained, would help reduce congestion and prevent fatigue, which often contributes to accidents.
“Check your vehicle’s condition – tyres, brakes, lights, and fluids – before departure. Use seat belts and ensure children are secured in proper child restraints,” Lee advised.
As a member of the Road Safety Council, Lee emphasised the importance of staying alert and focused while on the road. He also cautioned against distractions, particularly the use of mobile phones while driving, and recommended taking breaks every two hours to combat fatigue.
“Stay focused. Speeding, sudden lane changes and tailgating are major causes of accidents,” he said.
Lee reminded everyone to adhere to traffic laws, observe speed limits, and follow road signs. He also urged drivers not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. For motorcyclists, he stressed the necessity of wearing helmets and high-visibility clothing.
In addition, Lee called for patience and courtesy among road users, noting that heavy traffic is expected throughout the festive season.
“Remain calm and avoid aggressive driving. Give way to emergency vehicles and respect other road users. Both motorists and motorcyclists need to be mindful of pedestrians, particularly children and the elderly. Drivers must be extra cautious in residential areas and near Hari Raya festivities,” he added.
Finally, Lee reminded all road users that road safety is a shared responsibility and that one moment of carelessness can result in a lifetime of regret.
