AUTHORITIES are being urged to blacklist heavy vehicle operators found guilty of overloading without exception, in an effort to prevent catastrophic accidents such as the recent crash involving a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) truck in Teluk Intan, Perak, on 13 May.
Road Safety Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye stated that existing legislation is sufficient, but enforcement must be significantly enhanced when it comes to overweight vehicles.
“This is not a new issue, so what’s most important is stricter enforcement, and the authorities must not compromise on this... I hope with stronger enforcement, we can reduce the number of accidents,” he told *Sinar Harian*.
Lee emphasised that consistent and firm action would send a clear message to other operators to abide by the rules in the interest of public safety.
“The key is prevention. Don’t wait for accidents to happen.
“In terms of prevention, if a lorry is involved in an accident due to overloading and investigations find them at fault, the company should be blacklisted and its operating licence revoked.
“When licences are cancelled, it sends a strong message to other operators that the authorities are not compromising,” he said. - June 14, 2025
