DOMESTIC and low-voltage non-domestic consumers equipped with smart meters now have the option to subscribe to the Time-of-Use (ToU) tariff scheme, allowing greater control over daily electricity consumption and potential monthly savings.
According to the official myTNB website, the scheme is also available to customers using Current Transformer (CT) Operated Meters or Remote Meter Reading (RMR) systems, offering enhanced flexibility in managing electricity usage according to individual needs.
"With the option to shift usage to cheaper off-peak hours, consumers can now proactively plan to reduce their electricity bills without compromising on comfort," stated the Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) website.
This initiative is part of the recently announced electricity tariff restructuring by the Energy Commission, aimed at giving consumers the choice to shift usage to more cost-effective off-peak periods.
The revised ToU scheme now features extended off-peak hours, which include the entire weekend (Saturday and Sunday), as well as from 10pm to 2pm the following day from Monday to Friday. Peak hours remain from 2pm to 10pm on weekdays.
For example, domestic users who schedule high-consumption appliances such as washing machines, air conditioners, or electric vehicle chargers during off-peak hours stand to benefit from lower energy rates.
"The energy charge during off-peak periods for monthly consumption of 1,500 kilowatt hours (kWh) and below is set at 24.43 sen/kWh. The peak charge for the same consumption bracket is 28.52 sen/kWh, compared to the standard Domestic rate of 27.03 sen/kWh," according to the website.
To assist consumers in estimating their potential savings under the ToU scheme, TNB provides an online Electricity Bill Calculator on the myTNB portal. Users can select the tariff type and calculate their estimated bills before deciding to make the switch.
Applications to opt into the ToU scheme can be submitted starting 1 July 2025 via email to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or at any nearby Kedai Tenaga. Online applications through the myTNB portal will be available from 1 August.
