I CONGRATULATE president-elect Joe Biden on his election victory today to become the 46th president of the US.
I also congratulate vice-president-elect Senator Kamala Harris as the first woman – that, too, of colour and of South Indian descent – to take up the post.
As I said earlier today, the American people have chosen unity over racism, and a government that is committed to peace, defending human rights and the environment.
As a friend of his, I know that the Biden presidency will be one of inclusivity as he is a strong believer in equality, social justice and multiculturalism.
I am reminded of a video of him speaking to Muslim women on the campaign trail, where he asked them to be proud to be Muslim, and told them that under his watch, Islam will thrive as other faiths.
This gives me hope that America will overcome the ugliness of racism and chauvinism, which have reared their heads lately.
I am optimistic for a more inclusive and friendly America, and one that is consultative, not combative.
And, an America that will find itself on the right side of the world stage again.
I congratulate the American people for exercising their democratic rights, with record turnouts despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
And, I hope the country can come together after this hard-fought election.
As the president-elect said today: “It is a time to heal.”
Malaysia and the US have a long history in trade and bilateral relations, and it is my sincere wish for this relationship to be further strengthened together.
