KUALA LUMPUR – In the ever-changing arena of Malaysian politics, the journey of the Gerakan party – once a bastion of multiracialism and moderation – has been filled with highs, lows, and now undeniable challenges.
With recent electoral losses and criticisms mounting over its alignment with Perikatan Nasional (PN), the party now finds itself at a crucial juncture. To carve out a future marked by significance and influence, Gerakan will need to engage in introspection, recalibration, and potentially realignment.
Gerakan’s alliance with the Malay-centric PN parties PAS and Bersatu has provoked discussions about the party’s evolving identity. While strategic alliances can bolster political fortunes, they can also risk alienating core constituents if they are not consistent with the party’s founding ideals. Critics contend that Gerakan’s association with Malay nationalist entities dilutes its longstanding commitment to inclusivity.
For Gerakan, this raises a fundamental question: should it stay within the PN fold, or is a departure imminent?
One potential path is a return to Barisan Nasional (BN). Historically, Gerakan thrived within the BN infrastructure, benefiting from broader support while still emphasising its multiracial agenda. Rejoining BN could signify a return to familiar territory and possibly an opportunity to realign with parties that share a more moderate vision of Malaysia’s future.
The recent electoral setbacks are not merely numerical losses; they indicate a deeper disconnect between Gerakan and its traditional non-Malay supporters, especially in Penang. Re-establishing this bond is paramount. Grassroots campaigns, town hall meetings, and engagements with community leaders could mark the start to understanding grievances and recalibrating the party’s strategy.
Looking beyond ethnic lines
While ethnic considerations play a pivotal role in Malaysian politics, the evolving dynamics of the nation necessitate a broader policy framework. Gerakan should position itself at the forefront of key issues, such as the economy, digital transformation, environmental sustainability, and inclusive education. Its leaders will need to speak up more and have better visibility among Malaysians.
Currently, most of its campaigns or reactions to current events seem to be social media-based, but they somehow have very low traction. The party will need an out-of-the-box approach. Unlike its PN counterparts, Gerakan’s presence both in mass media and social media is almost negligible.
By addressing the various concerns faced by the people, it can resonate with a wider demographic, especially the youth.
Where does Gerakan truly belong?
The current political climate also warrants careful navigation. Gerakan’s association with PN has undoubtedly raised eyebrows. But would rejoining BN be the solution? The BN coalition, although historically dominant, has faced its own set of challenges. Gerakan must ascertain whether its core ideals align better with the evolving ethos of BN or if it needs to forge a new path, potentially crafting alliances outside both PN and BN.
Its arch-rival has been DAP, which now rules Penang, once the bastion of Gerakan. BN is now aligned with Pakatan Harapan, so working with DAP will be an awkward situation. But the option of working with PAS is also not so rosy, based on the electoral results.
A tough journey ahead
For any party, credibility and relevance are its currency. Gerakan’s journey ahead must prioritise the people’s interests, inter-party dynamics, and most importantly, its decision-making concerning political alignments. In the age of information, a party’s actions are constantly under scrutiny, and Gerakan must set itself apart through openness and relevance.
Gerakan now stands at a political crossroads, rich with potential yet laden with challenges. Its future hinges on a delicate balance between its historical commitment to multiracialism and the ever-evolving realities of Malaysian politics.
Whether it chooses to remain with PN, rejoin BN, or take an entirely new route, the imperative is clear: Gerakan must reforge its identity, rebuild trust, and reaffirm its commitment to a unified and progressive Malaysia.
