WHY are some people clingy and needy in their adult relationships, and some stoic and detached?

According to attachment theory, this is because we have different attachment styles. These are shaped and developed in early childhood in response to our relationships with our earliest caregivers.

Essentially, how we conduct ourselves in romantic relationships is thought to mirror the dynamics we had with our caregivers as infants and children.

Attachment style includes the way we respond emotionally to others as well as our behaviours and interactions with our significant others.

There are four main adult attachment styles: secure, anxious, avoidant, and fearful-avoidant (aka disorganised). The latter three are all considered forms of insecure attachment. Can you guess which one is Shazmin’s – diagnosis pending?

This week, Dr Joel explains the four different attachment styles in detail and how you can develop a more secure attachment style, in spite of your earliest relationships. – The Vibes, September 1, 2022
