MEN’S doubles Paris Olympics bronze medallists Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are set to receive at least RM120,000 from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), said Datuk Kenny Goh.

The BAM secretary-general confirmed they will be rewarded according to the existing bonus scheme, which is unlikely to be less than the RM60,000 each they received for their Tokyo achievement three years ago.

“We have our own incentive scheme for top performers in major events. The final amount will be discussed at the upcoming BAM council meeting,” he was quoted as saying in a New Straits Times report.

Kenny hinted that the reward could be increased:

“Let’s see if the council wants to give more.”

To date, Aaron-Wooi Yik are guaranteed RM100,000 through the National Sports Incentive Scheme (Shakam) and a Chery Tiggo 7 Pro SUV (worth RM123,800).

However, it is unclear whether they will receive one vehicle to share or get one each, as Chery Malaysia has pledged different models for gold, silver, and bronze medallists.

Further bonuses are expected from their sponsors, including isotonic drinks maker 100PLUS, home appliances maker Haier, and property developer Platinum Victory.

For the record, 100PLUS awarded Aaron-Wooi Yik RM60,000 for the bronze they won in the Tokyo games.

State governments are also likely to contribute, as Melaka and Federal Territories each provided RM50,000 after their Tokyo success. – August 14, 2024.
