FERNANDO Martin, a coach with Valencia CF, died with three members of his family after their boat capsized in Indonesia, Spanish football clubs said.

Valencia said they were "deeply saddened by the passing of Fernando Martin, coach of Valencia CF Femenino B, and three of his children, in the tragic boat accident in Indonesia, as confirmed by local authorities".

The boat carrying the family of six, four crew members and a local guide went down on Friday evening after suffering engine failure on a trip from Komodo Island to Padar Island, said Fathur Rahman, who heads the Maumere Search and Rescue Office.

He said three people were rescued by a passing vessel, and four others were picked up by a search and rescue team.

The survivors included the Spanish mother and one daughter.

The father, two sons and another daughter were missing, he said.

Search and rescue operations were continuing this morning, Fathur told Reuters.

Real Madrid CF also expressed its condolences on the passing of Martin, 44, a former Spanish second division footballer who was appointed coach of the Valencia B women's team this year. – December 28, 2025
