MALAYSIAN hockey legend Sarjit Singh, regarded as one of the finest players to have represented the national team and a former national coach, died on Sunday night at the age of 63 following health problems.

Sarjit breathed his last at 10pm at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

His passing marks the loss of one of Malaysian hockey’s most influential figures, with Sarjit having contributed extensively to the development of the sport both as an international player and as coach of the national team.

He represented Malaysia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, while also helping the national side secure Asian Games bronze medals in New Delhi in 1982 and Beijing in 1990.

Following his playing career, Sarjit continued to serve Malaysian hockey as a coach, taking charge of the national team from 2007 to 2008 before returning to the role from March 2024 until March 2026.

Under his leadership, the Malaysian national hockey team finished fourth at the World Cup Qualifiers in Ismailia, Egypt, in March.

The Malaysian Hockey Confederation expressed its condolences to Sarjit’s family and loved ones, wishing them strength, resilience and peace during the difficult period.

“Our deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. May they be given strength, fortitude and peace during this difficult time.

“MHC will always remember his dedication, service and contribution to the development of Malaysian hockey, both as a player and as a coach,” the confederation said in a statement. - August 24, 2026
