KUALA LUMPUR – The Badminton world was left in shock with the passing of former Indonesian badminton player Markis Kido who died yesterday due to a heart attack.

The tragic news was shared by another former player, Yuni Kartika on her Social Media yesterday.

In her posting, she said that Markis died while he was playing badminton in Tangerang, a city on the island of Java.

Meanwhile, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said that Markis was a great player, and it is a huge loss for the badminton fraternity, especially the Indonesian badminton fans.

“BAM would like to express our sadness and deepest condolence to the passing of Markis. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we hope that they will stay strong in this difficult moment,” he told The Vibes when contacted.

Markis won the gold medal for Indonesia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics for Men’s doubles. He partnered with Hendra Setiawan, where they also won the 2017 BWF World Championship in Kuala Lumpur, as well as the gold medal at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. 

Their partnership also included seven SEA Games gold medals

This news has taken a toll on Hendrawan as the dejected was lost of words when he was contacted by the Indonesian Media. 

“My deepest condolences to one of my best partners in joy and sorrow. He is one of the extraordinary and very talented players,” Hendrawan’s reply to a WhatsApp text from the Indonesian Media– The Vibes, June 15, 2021.
