KUALA LUMPUR – Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) deputy president, Datuk Seri Hamidin Amin, has decided to relinquish his position as Vietnam SEA Games chef de mission (CDM) to focus on his new role at OCM.
Hamidin created history in March by becoming the first football official to be appointed as CDM for the 31st edition of the Sea Games but luck was not on his side as the sporting event was subsequently postponed after Vietnam recorded a surge in Covid-19 cases.
Although the SEA Games is set to take place next year, the host nation has yet to confirm a date for the scheduled event.
As he needs to focus on his new role at OCM, Hamidin told The Vibes that he also wants to give someone else the opportunity to lead the national contingent to Vietnam.
“Yes, I am the first-ever football official to be CDM, but it is not the end of the world. I may get another opportunity in the future, but for now, I would like to focus on my responsibilities as deputy president of OCM.
“I want to give someone else the opportunity to contribute as I now need to begin work on my new tasks,” he said.
Meanwhile, OCM president, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, said that Hamidin has decided to relieve himself of his CDM duties because his new role, which oversees marketing, sponsorships and the relocation of OCM’s headquarters, requires his immediate attention.
“As his new tasks would be a challenge, we respect Hamidin’s decision to focus on his duties as deputy president of OCM and I am confident of his hands-on capabilities.”
Norza said that the OCM headquarters would be relocated to either Putrajaya or Bukit Jalil, where it will be accessible to all stakeholders, national sports associations and athletes.
“We are looking to build high-performance facilities with a modern design,” he said when asked about the headquarters.
The CDM position vacated by Hamidin will be filled by Malaysian Karate Federation (MAF) secretary-general, Datuk Paduka Nur Azmi Ahmad.
As the new CDM has vast experience in international networking and association management, Norza believes that next year’s Sea Games will be a resounding success under Nur Azmi’s leadership.
