KUALA LUMPUR – At the age of 19, Kuala Lumpur City FC’s goalkeeper Kevin Ray Mendoza had a trial session with English Premier League club Liverpool when he was playing for Danish First Division team Viborg FF in 2013.

Despite making only three appearances with Viborg, the Danish-Filipino footballer caught the attention of Anfield’s talent scouts with his outstanding performance.

At the time, Mendoza, who was quoted on the Viborg website, said: “I can’t wait to go through the trial session, I believe it will be a great experience.”

During this time, Liverpool’s main goalkeeper Pepe Reina was being targeted by European giants Manchester United and Barcelona.

Mendoza was offered the trial session following the lacklustre performance of secondary goalkeeper Brad Jones.

Mendoza shone during the recent Malaysia Cup final on November 30 when his superior performance helped to end his team’s 32-year wait to lift the prestigious trophy. – The Vibes, December 2, 2021
