KUALA LUMPUR − Sarawak-born squash player Harith Danial Jefri is only 16 and the thought of having a squash court named after him was the furthest thing from his mind.
As such, he was simply elated and honoured when Sekolah Kebangsaan Jalan Bintang in Miri, Sarawak − where he began his career in the racquet sport − named a court after him on January 5.
“I feel happy but then, I also have mixed feelings as I never expected them to name a squash court after me. I’m proud that I am able to achieve this at quite a young age.
“I started my training there when I was eight years old. When I had to choose a sport for co-curriculum activities, it (squash) was the only indoor activity... so I opted for it,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Harith, who initially trained under coach Jewan Singh Chal, is currently studying at the Bukit Jalil Sports School and trains under national coach Jess Tay.
The spirited 16-year-old said that he was preparing for the National Junior Championship that will be held at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil from January 24-28.
“I am working on sharpening my skills to go for the title. I will keep on working hard every day and never give up,” he said. – Bernama, January 11, 2022
