It is without a doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic has put a strain on many of us financially. While society has done a good job in highlighting and supporting more small local businesses that sell products and food, let us also not forget our local neighbourhood gyms.

Whether you have been a consistent gym-goer or someone who wants to start, it is definitely easier and more convenient (less researching) to go for the well-known gyms like Celebrity Fitness, Anytime Gym, Fitness First and Chi Fitness.

However, as popular as they are, their membership prices could also cause a big hole in your bank account and paying the big bucks does not necessarily mean better facilities that lead to better improvements and progress. Sometimes, your neighbourhood gym has all the adequate tools and types of equipment for you to perform your workout and all without burning a hole in your wallet.

Here are 5 gyms below RM100 that you could check out.

Fastrack Gym

Reviewed to be a calm and cool gym that greets you with friendly front desk staffs, sweat out to good grooves without putting a hole in your pockets. For the whole month of November, ladies only have pay RM60 for a month and with no registration fee for all. While that seems too good to be true, what is even better is their regular pricing which is at RM70 a month.

Real Fitness

Real Fitness not only seems to have a good environment to work out at, but they carry very good reviews for their personal trainers.

Real Fitness understands that the hours in which you work out at is crucial, therefore, they have a time package which sits at RM419 for six months(RM70/month) and RM749 for a year (RM62/month). The time package will be great for people who intend to work out during non-peak hours which are any time before 6 pm on weekdays and any time of the day during weekends.

But if you would like freedom in the times that you work out, the standard package would work just as well. Currently, they are having a six months package with a free additional one-month promotion for RM529 (RM75/month), and an RM909 one-year package where you will get two months extra for free (RM65/month).

Both packages have monthly packages as well as a yearly package. On top of all of these, members can bring one friend in for free during the weekends.

Body Factory

Body factory is a three-storey high gym with extensive types of equipment and free parking. If you sign up this month, you only pay RM200 for the first month and RM90 for subsequent months.

However, if you sign with them for six months, you get a month free; and all at the price of RM540 with an RM50 registration fee. You will need to pay in one lump sum, and although that may seem steep when broken down, you are only paying RM84 a month.

So, what if you want to sign for a whole year because this sounds too good? Well, if you sign with them for a year, you get an additional two months free; all for the price of RM960, which brings you to RM68 a month.

Location: No.11, Ground, 1st & 2nd Floor, PJ21 Commercial Centre, Jalan SS 8/39, Sungai Way Free Trade Industrial Zone, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor

PowerPro fitness

Located in Kuchai Entrepreneurs Park, Powerpro also has the option for walk-ins at RM10 per entry. However, like Body Factory, to get a monthly gym rate of RM75 a month, you must fork out RM900 for a lump-sum payment for the year.

Although reviews are scarce for them, the individual in charge of their Facebook account was extremely friendly when we reached out to them. They even told us about the parking situation in that area, which is quiet during this CMCO period but could get busy during regular hours.

OUG Gym

This gym might be the most expensive among these five gyms, but we have chosen this because of their student rates. For the month of November, regular members are charged RM80 a month, while students can purchase their membership for RM70 a month.

Regardless, OUG Gym’s regular, non-promotional price is also not extremely far off at RM100 a month.

Location: 4, off, 6-1, Jalan Hujan Emas, Jalan Klang Lama, Taman OUG, 58200 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur

Visiting a neighbourhood gym may feel daunting at first, especially since it does not come with bright lights and a fancy neon sign, and some of it may even look a little sketchy, but here are some tips before signing up with them.

  • Call in beforehand and listen to how the receptionist greets and responds to you.

  • Read and look up reviews of that gym.

  • Go for a visit with someone you trust, preferably during the time you would most likely workout, and see the crowd. Do you like what you see? Do you like the energy and the atmosphere? Is it in a safe neighbourhood?

  • Sign up with a friend and go together. Safety in numbers. This way you have a workout buddy too!

There may be plenty of other gyms near you, so do give your friendly neighbourhood gym a chance and show them the love and support they deserve. They may not have an elaborate website or a Facebook page, so just keep your eyes peeled on the shop lots around your area. As much as we support our local business, let us support our local fitness industries too.
