KUALA LUMPUR – It will be a battle of the greats as top seed Viktor Axelsen plays second ranked Kento Momota in the Malaysia Open men’s singles final tomorrow.
Danish Axelsen dismantled Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the semi-finals 21-15, 20-22, 21-11 in the semi-finals today at the Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil.
He told reporters winning the Malaysia Open is just as important as any other tournament he has been in.
“I want to win any tournament that I’m in, but this one I want to win really bad.”
Axelsen will be looking to win his first Malaysia Open. The last Dane to win was Peter Gade in 2007.
“Right now, I just have to focus on my recovery and prepare for the final match,” he said.
Playing Momota tomorrow, Axelsen said, “I am happy to see him back and playing well.”
Meanwhile, Momota took down Thai shuttler Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-11, 21-12 in the other semi-finals match to book his spot in the finals.
“I am happy to reach the finals tomorrow after going through some difficult times recently.
“But to be honest, I had no confidence going into the match today. I just tried to not mistakes and keep sending the shuttler over the net,” said Momota after his win.
Momota thanked the Malaysian crowd that showed him great support throughout the tournament.
“They have confidence in me, and I want to try my best for everyone that is supporting me.”
Momota will be looking to be the first Japanese men’s singles player to win a Malaysia Open. – The Vibes, July 2, 2022.
