KUALA LUMPUR – South Korea’s An Se Young claimed her first Malaysia Masters title today in an “unbelievable” upset against China’s Chen Yu Fei, 21-17, 21-5, making it the first women’s singles title for her country too.

This would also be the 20-year-old’s first victory against third-ranked Yu Fei as the latter previously had a seven head-to-head advantage towards the fourth-ranked Se Young.

“I cannot believe I won this tournament, it feels surreal because Yu Fei is a great player.

“I have been watching her games so many times before and I think I might have learned a thing or two from her.

“I did not want to think about beating her. I just wanted to focus on each point that I could score.

Se Young also noted that she could never expect what could happen on court, but the support of family, friends and fans are what motivated her to overcome each match.

In the men’s singles department, 45th-ranked Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo of Indonesia also performed an upset against his opponent, 13th-ranked Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong in straight sets 22-20, 21-15 in 45 minutes.

Like Se Young, this is the Indonesian’s first victory against his opponent after they had met twice in the past – 2018 Macau Open and 2021 Indonesia Masters.

“I am happy that I won this tournament because it proves that my form is improving.

“My target is to catch up to my teammates’ ranking, (sixth ranked) Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and (eighth ranked) Jonatan Christie,” said Wardoyo. – The Vibes, July 10, 2022
