KUALA LUMPUR – Even with all the preparations, diving is subjective and comes down to the day’s performance, said national diver Datuk Pandelela Rinong.

Fresh off her bronze medal achievement with Nur Dhabitah Sabri at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, the duo are back in preparation mode for the upcoming Commonwealth Games that will run from July 28 to August 8.

Speaking to The Vibes, Pandelela said: “Diving is subjective.”

“It all depends on the performance on the day and the outcome that determines who wins in diving,” she said.

Malaysia’s chef de mission for the Commonwealth Games, Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya, said he believes the national diving squad is capable of winning gold during the games based off its performance at the World Championships in Budapest.

Putting targets aside, Pandelela wants to do the best she can for the coming games.

“As usual, I am taking it one day at a time. But as always, I will be giving my best for the Commonwealth Games.”

Pandelela won Malaysia’s debut Commonwealth Games gold medal in aquatics at the 10m platform event in 2010 at New Delhi.

Meanwhile, her diving partner Dhabitah echoed her view for medal targets.

“I can’t say anything yet, we can just hope and pray for the best.

“I do not want to pressure myself into winning the gold medal. For me, I just want to perform well each dive and enjoy the competition,” she told The Vibes.

Coming back from Budapest with a bronze medal around her neck, Dhabitah said the achievement gave her positive strength going into the Commonwealth Games.

“I feel nervous and excited at the same time. The bronze makes me want to work harder and better for the Commonwealth Games,” she added.

At the World Championships, the duo got bronze for the women’s 10m platform synchro event with 298.68 points.

Pandelela also won bronze in the women’s 10m platform during the championship. – The Vibes, July 12, 2022.
