KUALA LUMPUR – Everything must come to an end as Malaysian mixed doubles shuttler Goh Liu Ying announced that she would be retiring after the 2023 Malaysian Open in January.

The 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist said the Malaysian Open next year will be her final appearance on the world badminton stage.

However, she did not reveal who she would be partnering with for her swan song performance.

The 33-year-old shuttler from Malacca said the 2020 Tokyo Olympics remains one of her best memories throughout her career.

“When we went to Tokyo, it just felt very different because it was a very tough time for everyone, especially us independent players.

“During the lockdown, we could not train or prepare for tournaments anywhere, there were many obstacles in our way.

“But in the end, we managed to get there, and I felt so much pride being the flag bearer for Malaysia,” the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist told reporters at the launch of the Sports Icon Awards by Harian Metro today.

In 2019, both Liu Ying and Rio Olympics partner Chan Peng Soon left the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to become independent players.

However earlier this year, Peng Soon returned to the national setup while Liu Ying remained an independent shuttler. – The Vibes, November 2, 2022
